Trippin' Again!

Myrtle Beach

Yep, we've been on a trip to South Carolina and boy was it fun. We first hit Charleston and took in the sights and history. Loved riding in the horse drawn carriage and being transported back in time and seeing all the beautiful homes and haunts, markets and the pigs statues in front of the home of the Piggly Wiggly store owners. Saw Fort Sumpter from a distance and love the ocean.

We ate in the most quaint, busy, side-of-the road restaurant. I had an orange Nehi drink and seafood. Lots of fun, had to park down the lane and walk a block, there were so many people there to get into this little spot.

In our 7th floor condo on the beach, at Myrtle Beach, the sights went on forever. Boy, oh boy do I love the ocean and the sunrises. We only had to go down the elevator, pass the pool and walk on the 15 foot boardwalk to get our toes in the sand. Just perfect place to stay.

We saw the group Alabama and a few other shows while we were there, but the best is the golfing.... 200+ courses in the area. Brent went 4 times and I went once. It was a fun time. The Witch Golf Course had swamps you drove through between holes and critters making all kinds of noise, and they preface your round with "Don't try and retrieve any balls in the water or woods."... And we could see why. But I didn't see any alligators in the ponds. Brent saw one on another course.

We saw the most beautiful gardens with statues and glorious art just hanging out at Brookgreen gardens. We had a river ride to see the old rice fields and then to the zoo on the plantation. Most huge spiders ever! Got to see a super long alligator, birds and foxes and so many more.

I even saw my first cardinal! Been on that quest since I was a little girl, so check that one off the list of lifetime "must see's"!

Everything there is cooked Calabash style, lightly floured and then fried. Some was good and some wasn't. We took a trip up to the border of North Carolina and had more Calabash at the original Calabash, NC! I loved that one, but Brent didn't, but that is because he only like buffets!
But we were both Calabashed out by the last day (The Giant Crab buffet did it for me!). So we hit Jimmy Buiffet's Margaritaville just hours before the real hurricane landed. Lucky we were out and had flown away on our way home by then. It hit just a few miles from our condo. So that was fun, too!

Labor Day was a fun time to go.
LOVE TO GO TRIPPIN!

Best of Times

Boy, oh boy, what a fun and relaxing evening up at the Red Butte Gardens last night. We got to see the Rhubarb Tour, sponsored by Ketchup! We love Garrison Keillor's ‘A Prairie Home Companion’ radio show and even the movie. He has such a great way of looking at life's happenings. I really loved his ode to Dad. Touching and of course got me all misty. Several years ago for Brent’s birthday we went to see him in concert with the Utah Symphony and really enjoyed that. The music, the stories, the sound affects, the venue, the weather, the night sky and especially my companion were all perfect. Couldn’t ask for a nicer time!

No One to Blame But Me!

I just hate haircuts!

Just mine, of course. It always takes weeks to get over one, no actually months, this time! I loved to cut hair, but always wanted it to be just what the customer wanted and usually got it right. Problem with me is those spur of the moment ideas and choices and knowing it will grow, eventually. Got daring and had an A-line, but whew, way to short, guess I will like it by December! But the one good thing is that my neck is way-cool!

Another funny thing happened to me earlier this summer, I wanted to go strawberry blonde and ended up with the color of a copper penny, just had to add some drabber and wait for it to all wash out in a week. Pretty funny, but you have to get your jollies where you can! I have always said it is better to wear funny socks and color your hair, because it would be really dumb to change husbands!

Blessings

I am grateful for my sis and good doctors and hospitals. It has been 3 weeks and finally Carol is out of the hospital and at home. Pretty tough and extremely lucky to be getting over an aneurism on your aorta. Glad this is behind us now and she can start to live her life again. Blessings and Thanks!

Just Beauty!

I think I'll never regret getting up early to see a glorious morning sunrise or working late enough to drive home in the orange hues of a beautiful sunset or sitting on a cruise deck or some balcony with Brent to see the fading orb drop into the sea. Just Beauty! And God has even given us rainbows when we are lucky enough to see them.

And then there are fireworks! LOVE them, and all that goes with them; the cool dusky air, the smell of the grass, the anticipation of waiting, all of those new glow-in-the-dark halo's and light sabers and the smell of the park food. I especially love the sounds and giggles of all the children playing with the adults muffled chatter in the background. Then, all are silent followed by an "ooohh" or an "awe" and when the first flash, crackle and pop displays a multitude of bright colors filling the child in all of us with wonder. Who can't love the falling glitter and the surprise of extra explosions at the end when you thought that one was done... All the bangs and the smell of gun powder in the fading brilliance and twinkling bits. It’s a bit of heaven on earth for a half hour. Sometimes, we even get music to synchronize with the blast and flood of colors in the night sky. I can't wait for the 4th of July family celebration in the park!

Fathers

Oh how lucky I am to have had a wonderful father, miss him and appreciate his sense of humor and of course all he taught me to make me whom I am today. GO CARDS!

But then there is the man that made me a mother, dear Brent. We've been together so long, I don't remember life without him and can't imagine one. Little did I know that love-at-first-sight existed or could mean such long-lasting love and a joyous life for me. He is a truly great husband and father. I remember one time one of my friends said years ago, just how lucky I was to have both the best husband and father in one man. Yes, I DO know just how fortunate that first glance at him was, all those years ago, but who would have known we all were to be so blessed?

He is a great example of how to love a woman and how to be a real father. He has shown hard and constant exemplary work in all he does, and is always steady and stable in his own goals and unique zest for life. No one loves with so much heart, be it his love for me, the kids or our grand kids. It's actually in everything he does, just like the joy he shows when he's singing and yodeling with me in the car.

No matter what sport he tries, his love of life is clearly visible, whether it is sculling on the Great Salt Lake, pitching in a softball game, training for a marathon or swinging his clubs in golf. He truly does enjoys any sport he tries, and keeps on trying to get better (no matter how early the hour may be....). And then he still has to put up with me... takes such a huge heart. You just can't help but love and admire him! GO ZIPPY!

Easy to Love

I woke up today thinking how easy Mary is to Love.

All she asks for is a little respect for her talents and contributions, a little compassion for her feelings and desires and a little appreciation for her efforts.

In return I get the partner in everything we do for for our whole life and eternity.

I get understanding, appreciation, love, respect, support. She laughs at my jokes, navigates when we drive together, cares about my job, cooks my favorite foods, scratches my back and forgives me when I mow down her plants in the back yard.

I think that all in all, I win.

Happy Mother's Day
OK so I was thinking ahead, by about a month when we were at Costco one day and I tried to get Mom to get a set of golf clubs. "Get them for me for Mother's Day" she said. So today, Saturday, I go to Costco ( disguised as a trip to get gas) and they are not open yet, so we go together this afternoon and low and behold, she still lets me get them for her.

Now, some of you may think this was nothing but imposing my will on her - but believe me - and I guess the old adage of getting other presents you would want if you were them, still holds true.

So we bring them home and go into the back yard to try them out and she hits balls from the back patio into the back of the yard and has the idea to go and hit them back towards the house. She happens to hit her best hit of the day and lofts a nice 7 iron from the back property line and sales the ball into the area above where the fireplace vent is, above the deck, between all the nice picture windows in the family room and bounces it off the stucco. At which point Roy brings out the wiffle balls, because he was standing in the kitchen door way when the ball bounced off the wall.

This present goes along way to match getting bowling balls and sleeping bags, now our lives have changed and it will be fun to find some golf courses where we can hack around the course just enjoy being together and laugh and drive golf carts and have fun - together.

Happy Birthday Brent!

Happy Birthday to my sweetheart, the man of my dreams and heart.
We had a BBQ yesterday, not for his birthday.... (really, just a coincidence!! right???)... he hates to have the lime-light on him, but he sure did get some fun presents. The day was 'beauty' as he says, just a perfect sunny afternoon with family and friends. He loves to cook for a crowd and we all had a good time. So much fun watching the grandkids loving our back yard and rolling down the hill.
Now to get to the chicken dinner he loves on his birthday.

Thrilled X4

Just want to brag on the kids!

We were thrilled to see Justin take the next step in his education and career preparation. He was accepted to the Masters program at BYU, in Education Administration. It is a two year course and he will be very busy will all his teaching duties, coaching responsibilities and family commitments. He begins this May. We feel that BYU only has a small inkling of how smart their decision to admit him, really is. He is a fine man in his own right, made better by the support of his Ashley and their kids.

Shane will graduate from the University of Utah with his Masters degree in Social Work. He has worked hard to accomplish this and is looking forward to now getting on with all the other exciting possibilities that lay ahead for him and his Ashley.

Jamie, Tommy’s better half, will also graduate in May from the University of Utah with her degree in Accounting. She has accomplished this while maintaining her career and her home life, including remodeling their home, finding time to play and of course, taking care of our granddogs. The two of them set some big goals and are now enjoying the rewards of meeting and exceeding their goals.

Roy defines the term dedicated. He is now one of the top outside sales people at Home Depot, in Utah. He is now seeing good results from his 12 hour days, six day weeks that he has put into the job, this spring.

All our kids and their wives and families bring a lot of joy in our lives. As proud parents, we want to offer our congrats for their achievements. I wonder what comes next????

St Patty's Day Celebration

We had our traditional St Patrick's Day party last night. For probably 10 years we get family and friends over to Brent's sister LeAnne's house for corned beef and cabbage and lots of other good Irish and green foods.

Then we all watch the 1952 movie "The Quiet Man" with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. It turns out we are like a cult watching it, in the same way that others watch "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". We especially like it when we have an engaged couple or newlyweds with us, so they can be properly indoctrinated, too.

We all get a hoot out of it and even sing along or at certain parts in unison we all start chanting, dum dum, dum dum, dum dum, didly dee dee, dum dum..... during the scene where he is pulling Mary Kate back to her brother or the big fight scene. Oh so many memorable quotes. For those of us who are true coinsures, most of those quotes just pop out, like "Woman of the house!" or "No patty-fingers, if you please." or " He'll regret it till his dying day, if ever he lives that long." and they just go on and on. So enjoyable!

The day usually starts out at the SLC St Patrick's day parade, then the fair with Irish food for lunch. Through the years, LeAnne has gathered up lots of hats, necklaces, lighted bow-ties, pins and anything to do with St Patty's day and we all get very festive for the occasion, even face painting and green tats. The last couple of years Clint, LeAnne's son and our nephew wears his kilt, and did I day he is learning to play bag pipes...maybe a concert some day. Not sure if he wears it in the proper manner.

You should rent it and watch it for St Patrick's Day and I know it would be a fun time for all!

Cat & Mouse

I bet this may have happened to you all too frequently and surely not at the best time, if you are owned by a cat. Here you are being oh, so, productive on your computer, just typing away and 'plop', you hear the feet pounce on the desk, then a wet nose nudge on you hand and your hand skittles over the keyboard, where they should not be. Then trying to undo and retrieve what should have been there the first time and yep, the furry paws walk on the keyboard again, and a whole new bunch of strokes are auto-cat-ically or kitty-magically added to your screen.

Cats love mice (Spot's breath smells like it) and he really loves to niggle your hand when you are using yours, making you not too effective on your purpose at hand. You just barely get that back under control and wait, then there is the paw reaching out to you or the feel of the rough tongue lick on the hand.

Yep, you have to give in and give him a quick scratch behind the ears and you are rewarded with that loud vibrating purr machine, volume turned up... and the serene green eyes looking up at you. Now a peaceful moment as Spot lies down luckily not on your keyboard, but next to your left hand covering the sheets you needed to see, so he can nudge and lick when he feels like it. Then after a few cat moments, he gets up and saunters off and out of the room with a polite "meow". Sure do love having critters, even if it is not your choice when they want some lovin'.

Whew! The Season is almost over

Well, chalk one more beautiful Christmas season over and we are looking forward to a new year.
Oh how we do love Christmas at our home and even all the hulabaloo that goes along with it. The shopping, the parties, the cooking, the fun, finding the right presents, the snow, riding the Polar Express, seeing Santa Claus, the family getting together, even getting a family picture and all that wonderful laughter. But we especially love those little eyes that just light up, or the new little words, like "Ho, ho, ho" from the twins. Or maybe it is the cry of delight when Makayla saw a package wrapped in pink princess paper. They were the very best, "just beauty", as grandpa says. Grandchildren really do put the icing on the cake and the cherry up there to boot, too!
The new year is just days away and I can hardly wait to see what is in store for
us next year. This old 2007 year has been pretty wonderful to our family.

California Fires Aren't My Fault!

Well, here goes another major catastrophe, California is BURNING! It's NOT MY FAULT! Really, it's just another place Brent and I are heading to for a trip in December. The hurricanes that wiped out Mexico this summer, again aren't my fault either! We were just planning ahead to take Jamie and Tommy for a cruise (a graduation present for Jamie) and the weather just hit another one of our ports again, like it did in Cancun and Cozumel for our cruise there in 2006, NOT MY FAULT!. And all those tornado's in Missouri this April when I went and worked in Elkhart, Kansas, NOT MY FAULT! And the roses not blooming in Portland this year.... And don't even go on about me and causing global warming with our wonderfully warm cruise to Alaska this last May, definitely NOT MY FAULT! And the other tornado's and torrential rain in Springfield, Missouri and Arkansas, when we were visiting Branson for the first time, NOT MY FAULT EITHER!
But, just in case I am carrying a bit of weird karma, you may hope I don't plan a trip to your city soon!

BTW- I know I am being flip, and my heart truly goes out to all of those affected by all of the happenings of Mother Nature, and especially right now with fires and devastation that has happened in California.

Did winter come and go already?

Saturday it rained, the wind blew, it hailed and snowed, leaving a white cover over all the valley. It looked so beautiful outside. We had a fire in the fireplace and felt cozy. But the snow won't stay long.
But with the snow it brings all the giant 'heards' of Starlings back, swooping and noisy and landing in the yards like a carpet of black, then the music of their rustling wings moving to the tops of the roofs, then another movement and blanketing the trees in black, then moving again like black waves of water flowing through the sky... I like them, it is a sign of winter here.
Today is glorious and fall and no signs of white, except way high on the tops of the mountains. It is still crisp outside and time to start removing the dead flowers in the gardens. Time to start preparing for spring.

The Beginnings

Se we have been talking for years, maybe it is about time to post on our own blog.

Branson

August 28, 2007

Well, Brent and I just got back from a trip to Branson, MO. We flew into Bentonville, AR. late Friday the 17th, and then drove to Branson the next day. Only 90 miles, but it took 2.5 hours to get there. Lots of winding, hilly roads. One of the jokes we heard and laughed at was that we were honking at the car in front of us and it was so twisty, we were honking at our own tail lights!

Branson is more fun that I thought, and oh so green, yes humid and a bit rainy too. But we had a great condo to stay in. I wasn't sure if I would like being in one place for a whole week, I am such an explorer, but there is so much to do there we can even go back and not hit anything twice. There is so much to do and it is all so different, it was a really fun time.

We saw the Circle B Chuck Wagon show on Saturday evening, The Horn family put it on, from singing to cooking to serving. They were great singers and entertainers, had a comedy act like the Tom and Dicky Smothers Brothers, but the pregnant sister was the dumb one. They were really good. It was fun, they fed us dinner, throwing out the biscuits and coming around to each table and slopping a spoon full of beans, meat, potatoes, applesauce, and cake. It was great. Loved the beans.

Then driving by the American Bandstand Theater on the way back to the condo, Brent saw the billboard for the 57 Heaven show. We stopped and hit it at 8:00. Both were fun and different. We saw Bryan Hyland who sang ‘The Yellow Pokka Dot Bikini’ and a bunch more, Fabian, Bobby Vee, Chris Montez and the Shirelles. Some were a bit older than our time, but we enjoyed it a bunch.
The Sunday we went for a lunch cruise on a big old paddle boat on the humongous Table Rock Lake, they feed you, and have a show, saw a comedian that was really good and quick, he really interacted with the audience and he was also a magician, pretty funny. They had a cruise type show of guys and gals doing Broadway and dancing and then had a Cirque De Solie type of dances from Russia. Really amazing ballet dancers with sashes from the ceiling coming down and they did ballet in the air. Really beautiful.

After that show we saw Jim Stafford that evening. He is funny, still picks pretty good and do you remember one of his hits, Spiders and Snails? It was fun, we were on the front row and he made fun of Brent when he was interacting with the audience. We have a CD of it and it was still funny the second time we watched it with the kids. He even had a very old 3-D section with glasses and all.

Monday we watched the rain come down in the trees from our balcony of the condo and had a leisurely breakfast. This makes it all beautiful and all green. That was when all the flooding happened just north of us, killed a few people and washed out many road and bridges. Just before noon, Brent went golfing and I shopped a bit. They have several outlet malls as well as all the other shops to see. He got so hot from the humidity he was soaked to the bone, all his clothes were soaking. It was a beautiful course, green, water falls, big hibiscus, as big as a dinner plate and all colors. He said the grass was weird and when you lost a ball, you could not find it. We headed back to the condo to swim and cool off Brent.... he was hot to the core.

That night we went to the Dixie Stampede, put on by Dolly Parton, it was fun, they fed us dinner, without any utensils; soup to desert.. The show was full of horses and even had stampeding buffalos and cattle, Southern Belles, Indians, pig races and it was oh, so entertaining. Not what I thought it would be, I thought it might be more like a rodeo. There was singing and dancing and horse acts and a rivalry between the north and south. Pretty fun.

Tuesday was a slow day. Brent slept in and I went swimming. He came out and then we had breakfast. I wanted to go to Springfield, only 30 miles north of us, but took an hour to go the old road. We stopped at an antique store for a while, then when we got to Springfield we had a Mexican dinner, more of them there, one on each corner, then I have seen anywhere. We headed back on the freeway and shopped a bit in the Old Branson downtown. Lots of junk, but fun.

That afternoon we took a tour of the site that does the play from the book The Sheppard of the Hills. It is over 50 years old and had a cast of 90 people, some who have been there for 30 years.. It was one of the first American authors that sold over a 1,000,000 in 1907. You should read it. We saw old Matt’s Cabin built in 1884, just a 2 room log cabin with a back screen porch put on later. I think grandma's house in Ephraim was build about that time, maybe 10 years before. I know my grandma was born in 1881 and she was born in it. I am amazed, it is so nice, rock and 3 stories high with a basement. I thought this house in the Ozarks had to have been built before the civil war, but not. Just good and plain people. It must have been pretty hard living. So many hills and woods (and might I add bugs you have never seen before and they are huge!). A few 'bald knobs' as they call them where the rock doesn't allow much grass, everything else is wooded with oaks, redbuds, sumac, vines and a bunch of trees I do not know. Vultures just a flying high in the sky, usually in pairs. More butterflies of all colors than I have ever seen outdoors. Just beautiful, so many colors and sizes... just like the flowers. But I digress. We went on the tour, went up to the Inspiration Tower, then had dinner in town and back again to see their show, it was out doors and a beautiful night.

They do the play from the book, it was written about many of the real folks that the author knew. It was in an amphitheatre, again horses, buggies, and one old crank automobile, they even set a cabin on fire, the old fashioned way, throwing buckets of oil on the cabin, then had to put it out by hand and throwing numerous buckets of water. You could feel the heat clear up in the stands.. Even had a square dance.

But the best part is they had this frog jumping contest just before the show started. It was held down on the dirt of the theatre stage., Brent entered it and won! He has a secret, just tickle it’s behind and it JUMPS! He has an official Frog Wrangler Certificate and got a lighted spinning ball on a-thing-a-ma-jig. Pretty fun. The show was entertaining, too..

Well,, maybe not the best part was the frogs jumping and Brent having so much fun, I think the very best part was that I even got to see my first lightning bugs (glo-bugs, fireflies). They are so cool! But no, come to think of it the best part was when I picture Brent down on his haunches and jumping behind the little green guy like a little boy. It was fun and make you laugh.. I didn’t have the camera with me so no pics of this, but pretty funny!

The next day, Wednesday, we swam again and I took Brent to Mel's Hard Luck Cafe, a 50’s diner, it was a surprise, all of the waiters and waitress's would get up and sing to the customers. They had 2 open rooms and they would go to each corner and sing, beautiful music everywhere. They would work in between singing, what a job!. Maybe 3 songs on the juke box, then they put in their cd and sang to it. Really professional singing. Food was fun too. Brent had an old fashioned vanilla shake and I had a dream-cicle, both were big enough for 3 people, but oh so good.

Brent went golfing again and I went shopping, didn't buy anything much, just a brush at the Fuller Brush Store. He had a good time and this time he saw a ground hog, huge one! We went to see the corny old "Bald Knobbers" show. It was fun, lots of dumb jokes and of course singing, dancing and singing. It is the first theatre of this type in Branson. Now they have 3rd generation of family in the show. They are the ones that have Hill Billies with the funny faces. We bought a joke book and you may be getting some of the dumb jokes we heard there. We went back to the condo and swam again.

Thursday we went to Silver Dollar City. It originally started out with the Marvel Cave trip. It still has the cave and you can go into, but it has developed into an amusement park, but with people demonstrating trades like; iron work, blowing glass, making baskets, brooms and candles, jewelry, candy and a ton more, plus everywhere you turned there was an open air pavilion with some sort of singing. One was rock a billy, one was the world champion woman yodeler, and one was gospel singing. We heard the original Homestead Pickers, who did the Beverly Hill Billy TV theme, they were the best and lots of fun. Ending with another huge amphitheatre at 6:00 p.m. and another hour long show of singing and dancing and of course the salute to the veterans.

Earlier in the day we went on one roller-coaster, Brent even went on it. He hates roller coasters. Then 3 rides involving water, and I mean you DO GET WET, soaking wet. Little did we know... but it was fun. Actually rode a rubber raft after climbing 100 steps, Brent at the front, 2 little kids in the middle and me at the end. Yes we were dripping, sopping, soaking, did I mention very, very. very wet! We especially loved the water cannons, great for a water fight!

We took the Silver Dollar Frisco train ride on their 24 inch gauge railroad. Got robbed and then the train steam engine broke down way in the back forty of the park, we had to be bussed in back into the park. I think we were closer to our condo and could have walked home, if we could have found the courage to get lost in the woods hiking up and down a few hollers. Still it was fun. When we left the show, we watched 2 squirrels and their antics, doing a ballet with each other and a tree. It was so funny, all those acrobatics playing with each other. I think they probably gave the ideas for snowboarders and their 720’s. I think that and the lightning bugs were my favorite part of the trip. Still have never seen a cardinal, even though I have been in plenty of the country to see one....oh well, one more quest for the future....

Friday we headed back to Bentonville and hit Eureka Springs in Arkansas. It used to be a favorite destination bath hot springs city at the turn of the century. Lots of old Victorian houses and buildings built into the cliffs on narrow streets, now filled with tons of shops. Looked like the old part of Park City. It is the number 2 wedding place in the USA. Who’d of thunk that?

We went to see the Blue Grass Festival, but never saw much. That was ok, we had had so much good music and entertainment in Branson. They have the Passion Play and the Christ of the Ozarks stature. It must be 40 or 50 feet tall of a very alabaster white Jesus. We didn't stay to see their play, but enjoyed the city.

We ate a BBQ pork meal at the world famous Bubba's BBQ, pink piggies everywhere! It was a luncheonette with pigs and memorabilia covering the walls. It was good,; coleslaw on the top of the slow cooked pulled pork meat in the sandwich and the best BBQ beans… Tasty.

We left there and headed to a civil war site, Pea Ridge, got out and to see their displays and then boy oh boy did it rain..... like buckets of water falling and then just kept coming. We watched it for a while, then headed back to the car under the big umbrella I had. Got us both back, and still got soaked getting the umbrella down... Good time. We never really saw this tavern on the ridge, It was raining to hard to see anything!

We headed back to Bentonville and the Sleep Inn, had to find a UPS to mail some stuff home, and tried to find a theater to see a show. No luck, but looked like their town was having a party downtown. We didn't go, I was getting pretty sick from having so much fun (or maybe all the water from the rides), so just went back and had a pizza at the same good restaurant next to our hotel.

We flew home early Saturday morning, hit Cincinnati as a stop and had a 4-way chili, been wanting to try one when I had been there before, not worth the wait. It is actually spaghetti with a soupy meat sauce, then chili beans, onions, then cheese on top. Only ate 1/3 of it and left the rest. Oh well got home safe, scrunched and sound.
We had a great time and may go back sometime.
